Fooled by the avocado brownies…
Avocado pound cake, vegan cupcakes, brownies–I’ve been seeing recipes for desserts with avocados everywhere I look, so when Price Chopper had them 5 for $5, I grabbed a bunch to finally try one.
Why put avocados in a dessert? Well, they usually replace the butter and sometimes the eggs in a recipe, so I guess it trades some saturated fat for the healthier unsaturated kind, as well as adding some vitamins, fiber and other good stuff. But I’m not making health food here, I just find this type of “healthier” dessert more filling and more satisfying. Unlike brownies made from a box mix (I could eat the whole pan), to eat an entire spinach cake or black-bean brownies…well, that’s a little less likely to happen.
Take these brownies. They are dense and fudgey without being too rich. Chocolatey and great tasting without being overly sweet. I like them. The only problem is waiting for avocados to go on sale. And not letting any four-year-olds see you mix these up. But really, you cannot taste the avocado in these at all. I might try to add the avocado frosting on top next time, too. And the good news is, I’ll have them all to myself. A-

…not fooled.
